Tours & Regional Activities

For those wishing to venture a little further from Ojochal, several tours can give you a broader experience of Costa Rica while still staying at Casitas del Sol. Everything listed here can be done in one day from Casitas del Sol.

Lalo’s Horseback Riding

Horseback adventures will take you through local Ojochal up to the Waterfall of Ojochal. More information will be coming soon!

Uvita

A short 20-minute drive up the Costanera gets you to Uvita, a popular tourist destination. Uvita is home to Whale Tail National Park (P.N. Marino Ballena), where the currents have created a sand bar and reef that looks exactly like a whale’s tail. <PIC HERE> A small fee will let you enjoy the beaches, and many water activities leave from here. Uvita also offers a larger variety of eateries when you are ready for different cuisine.

Whale Watching

Whale watching is very popular–when it is in season. This area sees humpback whale migrations from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres, making whale-watching a must-do!

An estimated 6,000 whales travel to our waters from Antarctica and Chile to calve and train their young during July-November, peaking in August-September. A smaller population visits from the US Pacific coast from December-April. Several tour providers in Uvita offer trips to be on the water with a good chance of spotting.

Water Activities

Water Activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, and fishing can be arranged through companies in Uvita. Cano Island is a protected marine reserve with plentiful fish, reef sharks, giant manta rays, and turtles and can be dived or snorkeled. Search Google for providers of these adventures.

Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary

Located between Uvita and Dominical, this wildlife sanctuary cares for and rehabilitates wildlife. Many animals come here after being injured and are cared for until they can be released back to the wild. Alturas is a great place to see local animals in a more controlled environment.

Canopy Tours & Ziplines

Several canopy tours and ziplines can be found just a short drive from the casitas. Tours can be scheduled out of Uvita or Cortez depending on if you are exploring north or south of Ojochal.

Reptilandia & Nauyaca Waterfall

A bit further north (1.5 hrs) you can find Parque Reptilandia, a reptile sanctuary. At one time it was home to all species of snakes that live in Costa Rica. Relatively close to Parque Reptilandia is Nauyaca Waterfall, one of the most famous in the region. Since they are both fairly far, combining Parque Reptilandia and Nauyaca can make your exploration worthwhile. It will be a long day and you will want to ask about closing times before venturing.

Sierpe: Mangrove and monkey tours

Just an hour from Ojochal, the Sierpe river is a natural wonder offering a wide variety of flora and fauna. Several tour providers offer guided tours on the Sierpe river. Tours are around 3 hours and can be scheduled for morning or afternoon. These tours often include sightings of the exotic wildlife: up to 4 types of monkeys (Howler, Capuchin, squirrel, spider), crocodiles, scarlet macaws, mangrove trees (“walking trees”), snakes, etc. We are happy to help you book your Sierpe tour.

Corcovado National Park

Corcovado National Park is a wonderland of biodiversity. Most of Corcovado N.P. requires staying overnight inside the park and is inaccessible as a day adventure. However, one station is accessible as a day trip from Ojochal. The La Sirena station has huge variety of life (especially tapirs) and can be done in a very long day from Ojochal. If you are considering a day-trip to Corcovado, talk with the on-site manager for more information and suggestions.
